Poetry by the Kids

In December, the children made books of poetry for their writing project.  They enjoyed the experience and each wrote poetry in a variety of different styles.  They hope you enjoy their latest boatschooling work!

Reese reads her poems to us.

Reese’s Rhymes

 By Riesling A. Conway

Sue

(a limerick)

There once was a young girl named Sue.

She loved flying down to Peru.

She’d sing a long song,

The lyrics were wrong

‘cause she couldn’t stop going “Achoo!”

Kai

(a limerick)

There once was a young boy named Kai,

He dreamed that he flew to the sky

He awoke in the night

With a wonderful sight,

To find that he was way up high.

Practice Poem

Before you continue reading,

Let’s get something straight.

This is a practice poem,

So it may not be too great.

The poem is coming to the end,

‘cause I can’t find any rhymes here.

It is only a practice poem,

So I don’t expect it to be too clear.

Rip-Off

(a haiku)

Rip-Off: Mischievous,

Upsetting, Surprising, Mean,

Lying, Cruel, Waste

Game Monster

(a monster poem)

The game monster has blue marble eyes and dice teeth.

She has chopstick fingers and card hair.

Her hand can turn into a ping-pong paddle.

Her legs are long and quick and good for hopscotch and jump rope.

She loves to play games with kids and cards with adults.

She is fantastic fun!

Writing

 The scratch of a quill,

Gives me a thrill.

It means someone is writing,

And it may be exciting.

The Fair

I went to a fair.

And in the circus,

I saw a big bear.

The bear shared a pear

With a small rare hare.

Caribbean

(a diamante poem)

Caribbean

Hot, Ice Cream

Swimming, snorkeling, playing

Fun in the sun

Kayaking, fishing, sailing

Beach, Ocean

Paradise

Pink

(a color poem)

Pink looks like the clouds above the setting sun.

Pink is the smell of a fresh frangipani in bloom.

Pink is the feeling of a fuzzy pink poodle.

Pink tastes like a cold glass of pink lemonade on a hot summer day.

Pink sounds like a raspberry growing.

And Pink is the color that dances among the flowers.

Christmas

Santa Claus with his big belly,

Which jiggles like a bowl of jelly,

Mrs. Claus, who he chose to marry,

With her nose that is red as a cherry.

And all the elves that have to stay,

Work on preparing Santa’s sleigh.

And when they see him the next day,

Everyone shouts out, “Hooray!”

WAVES

(an acrostic poem)

White caps cover the tops,

All over the ocean,

Vigorous,

Enormous and small,

Sprinkled with bubbles and foam.IMG_1014

Boatschooling -by Bryson

Here we are translating morse code messages to do a scavenger hunt my mommy set up for us.

I’m back everybody! The date is 9/26/12. Today I will talk about home schooling. Every day I try to wake up as early as I can and do 2 math workbook pages and 1 chapter in my S.S. book, HISTORY ALIVE. I also do 30 minutes of reading, spelling and sometimes not every day 2 chapters in vocabulary. I have also been learning morse code and I know a little bit without looking at the paper with the morse code alphabet on it. …. . .-.. .-.. — space — -.– space -. .- — . space .. … space -… .-. -.– … — -. (period>). Right now I am at my grandparents’ house; I call my grandparents Mema and Bestefar. The name Mema, is of Irish heritage and Bestefar is the Norwegian word for Grandfather.

While visiting with Bestefar and Mema they have been directing our studies. Yesterday we had a “sleep in”, or as Mema calls it a “delayed opening”…..today we are back on track with Professor Bestefar heading up our morning classes.

Mema took us on a “field trip” to the Long Island Aquarium for Science! Here we are petting and feeding the rays!

My Favorite Place on the Boat

I’m back! It’s been so long since I’ve written on my blog. You are probably wondering how, on a boat with so little space, my siblings and I have found so many things to do.

game time while under way

First of all, we have a medium-sized game cabinet. In it you will find an iPad, three DSi XL’s, and my recorder and music book. We have several card games, such as Sleeping Queens (Reese’s favorite), Frog Juice (my favorite), Loot (Porter’s favorite), Spot It, and a small deck of playing cards the size of a matchbook. We also have travel-sized games, like chess, Sorry, Bananagrams, Yikers, and Scrabble, not to mention the fifty games we have on the iPad. We also have water balloons, a knot-tying kit, and six empty bottles. You might wonder what the empty bottles are for.

My friend Caylin and her family got us six empty bottles with paper. We can write messages on the paper, put them in the bottle, and push them out to sea. We plan to do the first one in Maine, since that is the farthest north we plan to go.

working on my math workbook

In Reese’s cabin, we have tons of books. Actually, two kinds of books. One kind is for reading for fun. So far on our trip I have read two Hardy Boys books (#19 and #20) and am now reading Teach’s Light by Nell Wise Wechter. Teach’s Light is a tale about Blackbeard, the pirate. Another kind is for school, including Math workbooks, a Student Reference Book, our spelling lists, Phonics and Handwriting workbooks, and my Social Studies textbook. Right now, we are working on our Math workbooks, even though it is summer. We haven’t really gotten to the others yet. Also in Reese’s room, we have a bin of craft supplies and school supplies.

Reading the Hardy Boys in our hammock

We’re usually outdoors and we have lots of things to play with. Some of them are a stand-up paddle board (which already broke, but we are waiting for a new one), water guns, an inflatable kayak, a hammock that hangs from the boom, and SCUBA diving equipment. I tried the stand-up paddle board. It was a little hard at first, but after I practiced for awhile, I got the hang of it. I was using the water guns when I tried the stand-up paddle board. They are really cool and they can shoot over 45 feet.

I tried the inflatable kayak only twice. I really enjoyed that. I tried the hammock when I was reading. It’s really fun and when you angle it, the wind washes over you, which feels really good. I have never tried my SCUBA diving equipment because I am not yet fully certified. Once I get certified, you can bet I’ll be in the water every day!

Now you know that if you come for a visit someday, you’ll have lots to do! In my next blog post I will talk about sailing our boat.
